USING
TWHIRL
There is a lot of misinformation regarding how to use
TWITTER and
TWHIRL.
They can be an amazing tool for communication and marketing... only if used properly.
Twhirl is a tool that can stay on your screen all the time... but fades out in the background until you click on it.
Twhirl supports both Twitter and FriendFeed... which is a bonus! It is easy to tell the difference between the two. You will see the letter 't' at the top of the Twitter window and on top of the FriendFeed window.
The '@' Sign in Twitter.... is an important part of using Twitter. If you use the '@' symbol, like @Kathy_McMillan, Kathy will receive the message whether or not she is following you. That is huge!
In Twitter, every message is limited to 140 characters. That means that anyone sending you a message must make their point known... no more long drawn out messages. Therefore, scanning through all your messages can be fast.
Twitter is also a great tool to test headline. You become a better writer as you construct you message in 140 characters or less.
Using Twhirl
When using Twhirl, notice the HOME tab... right next to it is the @ sign. If you click on the @ sign you will see everyone who has personally messaged you even if you don't follow that particular person.
Twhirl allows you to shorten URLs easily. You can copy a long URL, click on the icon that resembles a chain, paste the URL. choose a service* and hit SHORTEN.
A new URL will appear in your message area.
***Pick twurl.nl because it supports click tracking to see who is clicking on your link.
Pay attention to the number between the chain and tick icons. It is the number of characters you have left for your message. When you have finished the message, click on the tick icon to submit your tweet.
The little camera icon is a TwitPic. Here you can post an image to TwitPic.
The URL to the image in twitpic.com will be available in the tweet area.
The '#' sign is another important symbol. This is used particularly around an event.
By using #
stompernet in your tweet, for example, it will be picked up by many other services. Again... huge!
If you want to reply to someone... hover over the photo of the person you want to reply to and click on the @ symbol. The name of the person will be inserted into the message area. This prevents you from making a mistake or typo. Using @, your reply will be available in your Twitter home page.
The envelope button is for sending a direct message. You may want to reply to a message that would not have any meaning for anyone else. This will not show up in your followers' screen.
Integration with summize and TweetScan allows you to use the search engines to locate any tweets with the word you have entered as the keyword.
Check it out... you will be pleasantly surprised!
