TWITTER and TWHIRL
Twitter is amazing! It is huge for Internet Marketing! It is a major communication tool.
First of all… to start with, go to
Twitter home page.
Now once you are connected with twitter… your impression of the site is probably…. this site is stupid, ridiculous and you can’t imagine how this site can be useful. IT IS!
The Twitter home page has a video that shows you what the service is. To sign up, click on the
Get Started – Join! Button.
Create a Free Twitter Account.
Here are the form fields you need to fill in:
•
Username: This will appear as your Twitter page. You may use your name, add underscore if you want. eg. John_Doe
•
Password
•
Email address
•
Humanness: A captcha that confirms you are a human instead of a script or robot.
Read the Terms of Service and click on the I accept button.
Create my account button.
Once you are registered, you will be redirected to a page which is your home page in Twitter. It will be blank because there is no activity yet.
Now add me (rmcmillan22) to your Twitter. The term used in Twitter is to follow.
When in my page (rmcmillan22), for example, when you click o the Follow link, Twitter will approve soon that you are now following me. Immediately after that you can set Device updates (like instant messenger) to use Twitter. You should probably avoid setting that up until you get familiar with the features.
Now… it is time to make your Twitter experience ten times better.
The beauty of Twitter is that you do not have to interrupt what you are doing to post something in it. That is also the reason why many other services fail.
If you have made
Flock your browser, as I have suggested in a previous post, then there are two places you can add tweets.
USING TWITTER FROM FLOCK’S PEOPLE SIDEBAR
The Flock’s People Sidebar can be accessed from the Flock toolbar (the people icon).
It will open a sidebar in Flock where you can look at your Twitter, Facebook, Digg, You Tube and other social media accounts.
The list of tweets are available right away in the sidebar. You can post a new tweet by clicking and typing in the blank field. The functionality is built right into Flock.
You can also use the Post Link to post a link. It will automatically take you to your Twitter page with the recent URL automatically filled in. This may save some time but you can do better…
The problem with this is that long URLs don’t get truncated. The in-built Post Link feature doesn’t shorten the URL so it leaves no space for you to write comments. People won’t click on messy URLs with no description.
Note: Perhaps you noticed it too, even though I adjust the size of the sidebar to the maximum, I’m still will not be able to see the whole tweet unless I hover over it. For me, that is quite annoying because it takes almost twice the amount of time to read it.
SETTING UP TWITTERBAR
A better way would be to use the Twitterbar to post URLs.
Choose Tools --> Add-ons. Click on Options on the TwitterBar extension.
There are actually two modes for Twitter, secure and safe. Secure, which is on by default prompts you for your username and password at the beginning of a browsing session when you first post. You will not have to re-enter this for the current browsing session for every other post. Safe mode sets your Username/password in the extension so you do not have to log in at the start of every browsing session. This information is stored securely in password manager. The Twitter API is a little weird, and there are times that I might still prompt you for your username/password even when using this option (most likely to happen with your first ever post from the extension).
I leave mine in the safe mode because I am not sharing my computer with anyone.
The Before URL option will prefix the URL with this phrase…. Currently Browsing… you can change that if you want.
The Open Twitter in new tab after posting should be unchecked… leave it that way.
One of the greatest things about Twitter is that you don’t have to be taken away out of the flow of what you are doing. Perhaps you should enable it to see if it works for you and then turn that option off.
Finally, you don’t want to disable the Hide address bar button. Press OK to confirm the changes.
Using Twitter couldn’t be simpler. You add your comment after the URL and hit the green plus sign on the right hand side of it. It also shows you how many characters you have left. Soon you will get a successful message. Check to make sure your new post is there.
Congratulations: you have tapped into the power and speed of micro-blogging!
